From Nelson Mandela donning South Africa’s green rugby jersey in 1995 to unite a nation divided by the legacy of apartheid, to India’s Rohan Bopanna and Pakistan’s Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi launching the ‘Stop War, Start Tennis’ campaign—sport reliably rises above politics and prejudice.

But recent India–Pakistan cricket matches tell a different story. The refusal to shake hands—once a simple gesture of respect—has now become a symbol of division.

If this becomes the new normal, what will future generations know of sportsmanship, respect, and unity?
