Every 90 Minutes, India Loses A Woman To Dowry

The numbers reveal the scale of the crisis. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 5,737 dowry deaths were recorded in India in 2024 — an average of nearly 16 women every day, or one woman every 90 minutes. These figures reflect only the cases officially recorded.

In recent months, India has witnessed several tragic cases of young women dying by suicide or under suspicious circumstances following dowry-related harassment and domestic abuse. Their stories have reignited an uncomfortable question: Why is leaving a toxic marriage still seen as more shameful than staying in one?

A recent story from Meerut offered a different answer. A retired judge welcomed his divorced daughter home with drums, flowers, and celebrations — not because her marriage had ended, but because she had come home safely.

Perhaps that is why Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s words continue to resonate: “A divorced daughter is better than a dead daughter.”

No marriage is worth a daughter’s life. Every daughter should know that choosing safety over suffering is never shameful.
