50 Years Of Emergency

Fifty years ago, India was in its darkest hour—the Emergency. A time of midnight knocks, civil unrest, curfews, the suspension of fundamental rights, and a silenced press & pliant judiciary.

Half a century later, the press is under pressure, investigative agencies are political tools, dissent is under suspicion, the autonomy of the Election Commission, the judiciary and other institutions is severely eroded. Satire, criticism and protest are increasingly unwelcome.

For Indian Americans, this isn’t just history repeating itself—it’s a reminder to defend democracy, its freedoms, and the right to question power everywhere.
